Viable reveal new videophone at CES 08

Computer, I'm Deaf, Wireless

VPAD vs laptop

Someone poke me about what’s up in CES 08 about videophone. Why, VPAD the videophone is incredible looking as it come with nice features such as wireless network (802.11g/b), 10.2″ with touch-screen and digital picture frame. For more deep information about this VPAD, someone have found more answer about this product that you make seek.

In my thought moment about this product, I’m not interest. Why? I already have laptop – MacBook that is already beyond. (Yeah, expensive but way cool and no touch-screen) Anyway, I can simple make connect with HOVRS which only support Mac until short time ago, I discovery that Viable have their own relay service support with XMeeting, the software of video conferencing. Well, XMeeting is beta and it never work for me. Maybe it’s because of network issues I don’t fully understand how it not work.

Anyway, I’m concern about how they can afford to spend on device to deaf as free cost. It looks like between $300-$400. Most deaf are usually seek for free to get. I think there are many deaf (non-geek) may not have their own wireless and maybe not familiar to use. I’m sure the company would have find a way to make easy instruction them how to use VPAD. Hopefully, deaf can understand it.

Oh yeah, I don’t think that 802.11b (B) is good idea to do in video conferencing. So this product should stick with 802.11g (G) which is much better speed in stream while running at least 640×480. I mean, come on, 802.11n (N) are hot cake and while G are frickin cheap in market.

What’s your think about this videophone?

By the way, I am going to be piss off if I see new ultra-thin laptop (it been rumor like madness) reveal at MacWorld Expo 08 which held on next week. I wouldn’t get another new laptop for next 3 years. Well, I’m still happy with my laptop for now. 🙂

People like you never cease to amaze me. You can’t have the police use VRS to communicate with you if the police is in the same room (or outdoor space) as you are. It is illegal to use VRS to call a person in the same room as you are or same space. This is illegal according to FCC. You are required to dial one phone number to use the VRS with a person outside the room or space. Just to use Video Remote Interpreting (different than VRS) local police department must be in already set agreement with Viable to use their Video Remote Interpreting service if needed. Local police are always contracted with local interpreting agencies. Same rules apply to all other VRS. Many deaf have to learn about this. Also, money don’t grow out of trees.

  • I highly doubt that VPAD will be given to deaf people at no cost unless I may be wrong. It would be nice to have VPAD but I am getting very annoying when there are too way many kinds of VRS such as HOVRS, CSDVRS, SVRS, and so on the list.

I think VPAD will do good for the Deaf and HH community. If the device meets my needs then I’m willing to spend up to $500 bucks. Not everything is free for the Deaf. Indeed, money don’t grow on trees. We are lucky to have that kind of technology these days.

To my surprise, the VPAD uses X-meeting software as the main videoconferencing mode. As a longtime Mac user, I had an opportunity to test the X-meeting on my Macbook Pro to call VRS and found this problemic wih stablility. You are right that this software is in the beta stage and should not be used until it is completely fixed and free of bugs.

The VPAD does not use X-Meeting. Like you said, X-Meeting is for Mac OS X. The VPAD is not a Mac. The specs on the VPAD *do* say that it is standards based, supporting both SIP and H.323 protocols. Maybe you are confusing H.323 with X-Meeting? If you’ve found X-Meeting to not be stable then that’s a X-Meeting problem and not at ALL related to the VPAD being in beta testing.
